A food collection initiative
NKUC is supporting Operation Ezra, a joint collaboration of Jewish and Christian groups, and the only organized Yazidi rescue effort in North America. We’re also doing a food drive.
The Yazidis are one of the oldest religious and ethnic minorities in the world, living primarily in the Nineveh Province of Iraq. They have faced persecution for over 700 years because of their beliefs. Their population has been decimated from 23 million to approximately 700,000 today with approximately 500,000 scattered throughout Iraq; 100,000 in UNHCR camps in Syria and Turkey and 100,000 in Europe (mostly Germany).
What happened?
Beginning in August 2014, the Yazidis were targeted by the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) in a campaign to convert them and neighbouring countries to Islam. The Yazidi refugees find themselves in segregated camps in Syria and Turkey. .
